The effects of ripe pistachio hulls hydro – alcoholic extract and aerobic training on weight and serum level of glucose and BDNF of streptozotocin-indnced diabetic male rats

Abstract:

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder that, by changing the weight and serum levels of glucose and BDNF, can lead to deleterious effects on the normal functioning of the body. Regarding the positive role of exercise in controlling many diseases and biological active substances in ripe pistachio hulls (RPS), the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of aerobic exercise and the use of RPS hydroalcoholic extracts on weight and serum levels of glucose and BDNF in streptozotocin (STZ) induce diabetic male rats. For this purpose, in this experimental study, male Wistar diabetic rats weighing ۲۵۰-۲۸۰ g were used in ۵ groups with ۷ in each one. SPSS software was used to analyze the data. The results showed that there was a significant difference between the groups in term of weight and serum levels ofglucose and BDNF assay (P <۰.۰۰۱). While intra-group comparisons showed no significant difference between sham group and diabetic group of saline, aerobic exercise could significantly compensate for weight loss in diabetic group receiving saline (P <۰.۰۵). Also, aerobic training cogether use of with effective dose of extract significantly increased weight gain compared to sham and saline groups respectively (P <۰. ۰۱ and P <۰.۰۰۱). Administration of effective dose of the extract and aerobic training with together with effective dose of the extract caused a significant decrease in glucose in diabetic rats compared to diabetic rats in Sham and saline groups (P <۰.۰۰۱). Also, the group uthich received effective dose extract significantly decreased serum glucose levels compared to the diabetic group receiving saline and sham respectivety with (P <۰.۰۵ and P <۰.۰۰۱). Diabetic groups receiving effective dose of extract, performing aerobic exercises and receiving the effective dose of the extract along with aerobic training significantly increased serum BDNF levels compared to diabetic sham and saline groups (P <۰.۰۰۱). In general, the findings of this study showed that hydroalcoholic extract of RPH and aerobic training could compensate for weight loss and improve the serum glucose and BDNF levels in streptozotocin diabetic rats.
