Abstract:

In this study, researchers explored how gaming impacts the vocabulary retrieval of Iranian EFLlearners. The study involved upper-intermediate learners from a Language Institute in Shiraz, Iran,selected based on their proficiency levels through the Oxford placement test. Out of theseparticipants, ۴۰ male and female learners were chosen and split into two groups: an experimentalgroup and a control group. Initially, both groups underwent a pretest, assessing their vocabularyretrieval abilities. Throughout the semester, the experimental group engaged with the computergame "Call of Duty," while the control group followed the regular class schedule without anygaming activities. Each group had ۱۸ sessions. At the semester's end, both groups were subjected toidentical post-tests to measure their progress. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS version ۲۷,involving demographic and quantitative data description, followed by pair t-tests and ANCOVA togauge the treatment's impact. The findings indicated that playing the computer game positivelyaffected the experimental group's vocabulary retrieval, showcasing a notable difference. Thisresearch outcome could hold significance for curriculum designers, and learners of foreignlanguages.
