Abstract:

Mg alloys have received a great attention in recent years due to their excellent specific strength and stiffness, which are much desirable properties for applications in transportation systems that require light-weight components. However, application of Mg alloys, particularly wrought products, in transportation systems is limited since few wrought Mg alloys fulfill the properties and cost requirements of automobile industry. Despite a rather extensive amount of research, there are still many fundamentally and/or technologically important questions to be answered for the much wider applications of wrought Mg alloys. In this presentation, the recent progress in the development of wrought Mg alloys will be reviewed with particular emphasis on the fundamental aspects such as microstructure and texture evolution and deformation behavior. Also discussed will be the author’s own perspective, which would guide future research aimed at improving the properties and broadening the structural applications of wrought Mg alloys.
