ISSUES ON CONFLICT RESOLUTION IN CROSS RIVER NATIONAL PARK, SOUTH EASTERN NIGERIA abstract
This study was aimed at ascertaining the cause of conflicts in Cross River National Park and proffer adequate recommendation. The primary data were obtained using structured questionnaires randomly administered to 360 respondents in 12 communities while the secondary data was obtained from relevant literatures. Data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistical technique. The result indicated that majority of the respondents was married (83.97%), literate (93.97%), within the age class of 24-59 years (75.29%) and are mostly farmers (82.47%). Also, majority of the respondents were aware of the park existence 68.69% (239), park legislation 71.55% (249) and the reason for its creation to include conservation (70.48%). Moreover, majority were aware of the conflict (63.79%), violated that park laws (53.45%), and viewed the park as a bad project (75.29%) and not in support (77.02%) because it made them poorer (74.42%) and 73.85% of the respondents were not involved in the management of the park. However, 75.86% of the respondents were of the view that the conflict can be resolved through dialogue and 88.79% were willing to participate in the management of the park. The provision of the community‟s needs and their participation in the park management will ensure a harmonious co-existence and the actualization of the goals of establishing the national park.
