Application of a Selective Polymeric Membrane Sensor for Determining Hg2+ as One of the Most Toxic Elements With High Selectivity abstract

This work introduces a unique ionophore; kryptofix5 for the selective determination of Hg(II) ions. In this study, construction of a new mercury selective disk electrode based on kryptofix5 as a neutral carrier has been described. The electrode has a response time of about 15s and can be used for at least 5 months without any significant divergence in potentials. The selectivity coefficients for mono, di, and trivalent cations indicate a good selectivity for Hg(II) ions over a large number of interfering cations. The proposed electrode used as an indicator electrode for potentiometric titration of Hg2+ using EDTA, sodium soulfide, sodium chloride solutions with a sharp potential change occurred at the end point. The proposed electrode also was applied for the direct determination of Hg2+ cation in real samples spiked with mercury (II) cation.
