Abstract:

Ultrasonic Shot Peening (USP) is a surface treatment that has been widely used in automotive, aerospace, and marine industries to enhance components’ mechanical and metallurgical properties by creating compressive residual stresses (CRS) on materials’ surfaces with spherical shots resonated by a vibrating body, called sonotrode, thus help the components to perform as efficiently and reliably as possible during their service life. In this paper, first, the shot peening process and its mechanism are introduced to help give a better introduction and understanding of the USP process. Then, after introducing the USP process and its parameters, the research done on the process since ۱۹۹۹ up to the present are studied in a categorized manner to exactly specify the effects USP has on materials’ grain size, fatigue strength, corrosion behavior, hardness, and other mechanical and metallurgical properties; concluding that USP refines surface grains that leads to the betterment of the entire material’s properties
