Abstract:

Collocations can be defined as the consistent pairing of a certain word with another word or words, occurring more frequently than would be expected by chance. This research project is a descriptive textual analysis on translation of collocations, specifically focusing on the examination of lexical and grammatical collocations derived from the novel entitled "The Reluctant Fundamentalist" by Mohsin Hamid (۲۰۰۷). The Persian translation of each collocation will be examined within a theoretical framework derived from Vinay and Darbelnet's (۱۹۹۵) model. This model delineates two overarching translation approaches, each accompanied by supplementary strategies. The aim is to analyze the frequency and percentage of the utilization of these strategies by translators. In order to achieve this objective, a total of ۱۵۰ collocations were chosen based on the definition proposed by Benson and Ilson(۱۹۹۳). These selected collocations were subsequently compared with their equivalent counterparts in the Persian language. The analysis will involve categorizing each collocation and then assessing the frequency of each method applied. The research indicates that translators utilized the oblique strategy more frequently (۵۸%) compared to the direct approach (۴۲%). In addition, the statistics also demonstrate that the literal strategy was more frequently employed (۴۱.۳۳%) while the calque strategy was the least utilized (۰%) compared to other strategies. Due to the nature of this study being a case study, it is not possible to extrapolate its findings to a broader population. The findings of this study align with the majority of prior research conducted in this particular subject, indicating a prevalent preference for employing the oblique technique over the direct approach
