Abstract:

Taboo words are speech, behavior, and social issues that people refuse to talk about because they can make people feel offended or embarrassed. The current research was a descriptive textual analysis. The aim of this research was to examine the taboo words and translation strategies used in the Hitman's Bodyguard (۲۰۱۷) and Sausage Party (۲۰۱۶) movies. The first stage involved identifying the taboo words in the original version of the text, together with their corresponding timestamps in the Persian subtitles. These collected taboo words were then organized and recorded in an information table. Consequently, every taboo word was examined, and a plan of action was established. During the data analysis process, once the strategy has been identified, it is categorized, and statistical data pertaining to the strategy is provided. Finally, the frequency of each category was computed. From the ۱۵۰ data collected, Avila Cabrera (۲۰۱۴) found ۵ strategies, namely Maintained (۳۶%), Toned up (۲۳%), Toned down (۱۹%), Neutralized (۱۱%), or Omitted (۱۱%), It means the predominant strategy was maintained, while neutralization and omitted were the least utilized. This research explores strategies to handle taboo words in cinematic works, providing insights into societal sensitivities and linguistic adaptations in film narratives
