Abstract:

Engaging with the culture and art of different societies often involves an understanding of their beliefs and values. These beliefs frequently manifest as specific patterns in artistic creations and cultural-historical artifacts, underscoring the importance of recognizing these patterns. The Meander motif, used historically across various cultures and civilizations as a decorative and symbolic element, is one such pattern. This descriptive-analytical study explores the significance of the Meander, its meanings, and its representation of beliefs and viewpoints within Greek culture and civilization. By analyzing the role of the Meander, along with its historical meanings and concepts, the research examines various patterns and their interconnections. The study reveals that this symbolic ornament developed concurrently in different parts of the world, including in Greek culture. In Iranian art, the Meander motif, often symbolic and previously unrecognized, dates back to the prehistoric era. However, its more consistent and prominent presence is noted in the ancient civilizations of China and Greece, where it is commonly symbolized as an emblem of vitality and longevity.
