Abstract:

The main issue of this study is to evaluate the effect of Plane of Crack (PLC) on the redistribution of residual stresses by random mechanical impacts, which is called Shot Peening (SP) in the Compact Tension specimen (CT). Many numerical Finite Element (FE) models were introduced to analyze the residual stresses on target without any cracks and defects. In this research, the FEM-based approach was introduced to simulate the residual stress redistribution around the PLC by peening. Based on this technique, a constant cell in the three-dimensional model is separated from CT, including the PLC and uncracked treatment region, to measure the residual stresses. The results showed that the existence of PLC can influence residual stress fields. Also, there is a negligible difference in values of generated residual stresses using rigid and elastic shots for low coverage of SP.
