Abstract:

The issue of the relationship between reason and religion is one of the important issues that has always been the focus of religious thinkers. Concerning the relationship between rationality and religion, there are different views, including two general views of extreme rationalism and anti-rationalism among thinkers. The inefficiency of extreme approaches in the field of religion and rationality has caused the emergence of more moderate attitudes in the interpretation and justification of rationality and its relationship with religion. In this article, using the hermeneutic approach, the opinion of Ayatollah Motahari about the relationship between reason and religion is discussed. Relying on Quran and Sunnah, Ayatollah Motahari explains the relationship between reason and religion. He argues that religion and reason are not conflicting sources, but both are complementary and in the final analysis have the same destination. In the opinion of Ayatollah Motahari, rationality alone will not be enough to ensure human happiness, and it is necessary to coordinate with religion and use the power of religion to provide necessary harmony and balance to ensure human happiness.
