Abstract:

Automotive brands constantly make various changes to attract more customers. These changes, regardless of their quality, can either succeed or fail with a few simple adjustments, whether it's a car emblem or anything else. Some individuals dismiss an object at first glance. Upon inquiry about the reason, one of the reasons they cite is the asymmetry of the object. When asked to define symmetry, they describe it as an imaginary line that divides the shape into two equal parts in their mind. If everything on both sides of this imaginary line is the same, the shape is considered symmetrical; if not, it is deemed asymmetrical, and they choose not to select it. This behavior of avoiding the object is likely due to the defense mechanism of avoidance, aimed at reducing or eliminating tension. Therefore, we collected the necessary information to examine this possibility and its manifestation in car design. The cause and a solution to prevent it were concluded through document and library research. Based on Sigmund Freud's psychosexual stages of personality development, Melanie Klein's theories, and various defense mechanisms, it can be concluded that there are similarities between the defense mechanism of splitting and symmetry. Subsequently, considering the theory of continuous personality development, a solution for designing asymmetrical objects and cars was proposed.
