Abstract:

Ground-borne vibrations induced by propagation of surface waves due to train movement may causediscomfort to residents living nearby railways. These vibrations may also interfere with instrumentationworks in hospitals, laboratories, and industries located in the proximity of these railways. Excavating atrench in the wave path is one of the conventional solutions to mitigate the train-induced vibrations. Thispaper aims to investigate the efficiency of trench construction as a solution to reduce the vibrations causedby train movement and the effect of various factors such as the depth, width and distance of the trench onisolation efficency of vibrations.
