Abstract:

Aim: Measure significant findings about the knowledge level and information needs of patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) in Yogyakarta City, Indonesia, and develop an appropriate strategy to address this issue. Methods: A cross-sectional design has been applied. About ۱۵۵ patients with diabetes mellitus are invited to fill out a questionnaire consisting of demographic data, DKQ-۲۴ questionnaire, and information needs. Sixteen pharmacists were voluntarily recruited in a survey to complete the demographic data and open-ended questions related to pharmacy services in their workplaces. Findings: No correlation was found between knowledge level and factors such as age, gender, occupation, income, education, medications, comorbidities, or blood sugar levels. However, there is a significant link between diabetes duration and knowledge. Pharmacists provide education and counselling, but most lack specialised training, limiting education to new patients and those with uncontrolled blood sugar levels. Challenges for pharmacists include limited time, lack of dedicated space, and the absence of standardised documentation. Conclusion: The moderate knowledge level of patients underscores the need for standardised, comprehensive educational materials and training for pharmacists to improve patient understanding and disease management related to diabetes.
