Research Article: Reproductive biology of silver barb, Barbonymus gonionotus (Bleeker, ۱۸۵۰), in Lake Tempe, Indonesia

Information about the reproductive biology of the silver barb is essential for conservation and domestication purposes. This study aims to analyze the reproductive biology of the silver barb in Lake Tempe, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The aspects of reproductive biology analyzed include length-weight structure, sex ratio, length-weight relationship, condition factor, first gonadal maturity size (L۵۰), gonadal maturity, and fecundity. This study used primary data, with silver barb fish being caught using gill nets every week from January to July ۲۰۲۳. The total length of the fish was measured using an ichthyometer with an accuracy of ۰.۱ cm, and the weight was measured using a digital scale with an accuracy of ۰.۰۱ g. The gonads were preserved in a ۴% formalin solution, and fecundity was calculated using the gravimetric method. The length structure of male ranged from ۸.۹ to ۲۲.۹ cm, and females ranged from ۸.۹ to ۲۸.۵ cm. Males had weights between ۲۱.۲ and ۱۸۳.۲ g, and females ۲۱.۲ and ۳۱۲.۸ g. The overall sex ratio of males to females was ۱:۱, while the sex ratio during spawning was ۱:۳ (polygamy). The length-weight relationship for males and females was W = ۰.۰۲۳۴L۲.۷۳۴۹ and W = ۰.۰۱۷۲L۲.۸۷۶۶, respectively. The condition factor for both males and females was ۱.۰۲. The first gonadal maturity size for females was ۱۸.۳ cm and ۱۹.۹ cm for males. Spawning was partial, with fecundity ranging from ۲۵۳ to ۱۳,۳۹۸ eggs.
