Abstract:

This study focuses on the impact of social cognition deficits and their consequences on the functional outcomes of individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Initially, an overview of the social cognition construct, its effects on psychiatric disorders, and its significance in daily functioning is provided. Subsequently, the research delves into the characteristics of social cognition impairments specific to schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, including theory of mind, social perception, and emotion recognition, while examining the association between these impairments and functional outcomes. Intermediary factors such as emotional cognition and symptoms are also considered and their effects on functional outcomes are discussed. Finally, recent developments and current treatment methods are summarized
