Abstract:
Rarely occurring earthquakes can cause heavy damage to building structures. It seems that thedesign of structures using mechanisms other than ductility to provide stability for intensity higher thanthe design-based earthquake (DBE), can be a suitable option to reduce the collapse probability. In thisregard, the design of a mass-isolated structure with a multi-phase behavior for use as a seismic loadbearingsystem has been investigated. In this type of configuration, by separating the mass from thestiffness of the system in the vertical direction, the structural system is transformed into two flexibleand stiff subsystems, which can be used as a damping amplification technique by using an appropriateenergy dissipation mechanism between these two parts. The results of stability and nonlinear analysisindicate that this type of structure can be effective in improving seismic performance compared toconventional structures due to the multi-phase seismic behavior
