Abstract:

We introduce SyntSeis, a flexible Python package for generating synthetic and real-worldsimulated earthquake bulletins, which are collections of data about the location, time, magnitude, andphase arrivals of seismic events. SyntSeis can create realistic bulletins for various scenarios, such asdifferent velocity models, fault geometries, GPS errors, station noise models, and attenuationequations. SyntSeis can be used for developing, testing, and comparing seismic monitoring andanalysis methods, as well as for training machine learning models, assessing hazard and risk, andeducating students and professionals. SyntSeis also enables robustness testing, innovation, andcollaboration in seismic research. It allows researchers to experiment with new approaches to dataintegration, event detection thresholds, and seismic parameter estimations. It also provides a platformfor assessing algorithmic reliability under different conditions, such as noise, uncertainties, andvarying velocity structures. We demonstrate the capabilities and applications of SyntSeis with anexample showing a full synthetic senario.
