Abstract:

The rise of concerns for climate change and consumers’ shift toward preserving natural resourceshave shifted the engineering paradigm to developing sustainable and resilient infrastructure. Structuralengineering of earthquake-resistant systems follows these trends by identifying sustainability andresilience concepts and handling their interactions in environmental, societal, technical, and economicdomains. This paper aims to outline theoretical concepts to address challenges in the current standardpractice of structural engineering concerning seismic events and earthquake resistance. The primaryobjectives of these concepts involve techniques to prevent substantial damages during seismic eventsand restore the functionality of buildings after such events. These objectives satisfy broader goals ofresilient design, including robustness, redundancy, resourcefulness, and rapid recovery. Themethodology discusses synergic opportunities and conflicting sustainable development andinfrastructure resilience areas. Results also relate to net zero concepts concerning greenhouse gasemissions, energy, waste, and water footprints.
