Abstract:
Meta-material-inspired periodic foundations, a novel approach in civil engineering, enhancestructure longevity and stability, especially in challenging soil or earthquake-prone areas. This studyemploys finite element analysis to assess the seismic behavior of a single-span steel frame with aninnovative meta-foundation design, incorporating periodic layers of concrete and rubber, known as aperiodic foundation (PF). Thoroughly comparing with conventional concrete slabs foundation (CF),the study assesses reaction forces, column base moment, frame drift, stress, and foundationdisplacement. The results highlight a substantial advantage with PFs, revealing an average ۹۷.۷%reduction in maximum drift across the three earthquake records. While PFs introduce heightenedsystem flexibility, careful considerations are crucial in seismic-prone regions. Moreover, PFs exhibitsignificant stress reduction, averaging ۹۵.۷%, positively impacting building safety. The studyunderscores PFs' crucial role in minimizing reaction forces and moments at the column base, enhancing structural stability in seismic regions.
