Abstract:
This study aims to develop a new practical technique to achieve the optimal distribution of frictiondampers in steel moment-resisting frames (SMRFs) subjected simultaneously to two differentperformance targets. In this research, maximum inter-story drift and collapse resistance capacity of thestructure are selected as the objective performances. To achieve this goal, a novel approach calledadaptive optimization technique (AOT) is adopted. An ۸-story SMRF is used to demonstrate theefficiency of the proposed method. Results show that the optimum dampers satisfying a certainseismic performance do not necessarily satisfy the other performance level. The AOT technique wasfurther developed to overcome this shortcoming. The results of analyses show that this new AOTapproach is successful in providing an optimal distribution of dampers for simultaneous seismicperformance levels.
