Effect of hydrophobic silica aerogel on color stability of gingival-colored PMMA

Abstract:

The main objective of the present study was to investigat the color stability and the difference in colour between PMMA samples reinforced with different concentrations of nano porous silica aerogel and commercially available PMMA denture bases. We prepared ۲۵ samples, consisting of ۵ samples of commercially available PMMA denture base and ۲۰ samples of silica aerogel-reinforced PMMA denture base with concentrations of ۲.۵%, ۵%, ۷.۵%, and ۱۰% (۵ samples each). We measured the colour differences of the samples using CIA lab and CIA۲۰۰۰ (۱:۱:۱) tests. The results of the study showed that the ∆E values (a measure of color difference) of the samples increased as the concentration of Nano porous silica aerogel increased. The ∆E values for the ۲.۵%, ۵%, ۷.۵%, and ۱۰% silica aerogel-reinforced PMMA samples were ۱.۱, ۱.۱۲, ۱.۲۳, and ۱.۶, respectively. Similarly, the ∆E۲۰۰۰ values (another measure of color difference) for the respective samples were ۰.۸۹, ۱.۰, ۱.۲۶, and ۱.۵. And the values of ΔE color stability for untreated samples are ۱.۵۲, ۵/۲%, ۱.۹ for ۵%, ۰.۹ for ۵%, ۷% ۱.۲۳, and for ۱۰% sample ۱.۱۵. And these values for ∆E۲۰۰۰for the mentioned samples are calculated as ۰.۸۹, ۱.۲۱, ۰.۶۷, ۰.۷۷, and ۰.۸۷, respectively.
