A PRODUCT-ORIENTED STUDY OF A FAREWELL TO ARMS ON THE BASIS OF TRANSLATION PROCEDURES PROPOSED BY PETER NEWMARK

The present study was conducted to compare the text of the well-known American novel A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway with its two Persian translations. The purpose of the study is to detect the procedures used in translation of morphemes, words, phrases, clauses and sentences by the two translators. In addition, the present paper aims at determining whether or not the translators have been consistent in rendering words, phrases, clauses and sentences based on Newmark’s procedures. In doing so, some text segments from the novel and their corresponding parts in the Persian translations have been selected as the samples. Then, comparisons were made and classified in terms of transference, synonymy, shifts, modulation, expansion, omission, etc. After gathering the sufficient related data, the dominant strategies of the two translators in applying Newmark's procedures have been analyzed. The results of the research showed that neither of the two translators was completely consistent in using Newmark's procedures in process of rendering words, phrases, clauses and sentences
