Abstract:
This study examines the seismic collapse safety of ۳-, ۶-, and ۱۲-story steel moment-resisting frames (SMRFs) designed using a metaheuristic optimization algorithm. After optimizing designs to minimize weight, seismic performance was evaluated via Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA) under ۲۲ earthquake records, following FEMA P۶۹۵ guidelines. Results showed high collapse safety margins for ۳- and ۶-story models (ACMR ۳.۲۲–۴.۶۸), indicating over-design, while ۱۲-story models had lower margins (ACMR ۱.۴۵–۱.۶۱), with one case falling below the safety threshold. The study confirms that optimization effectively reduces weight but suggests further refinements for tall buildings to improve seismic resilience. These findings support performance-based design improvements that balance safety, efficiency, and cost.
