Abstract:

Historical urban fabrics, due to their complex spatial structure, high density, and significant cultural-economic functions, hold a critical place in urban planning. Within these contexts, pedestrian pathway design is increasingly recognized as a strategy for enhancing the quality of public spaces, improving accessibility, and strengthening urban vitality. Designing pedestrian routes in historic areas extends beyond mere connectivity; it requires careful consideration of spatial legibility, continuity, visual aesthetics, and compatibility with the historical structure. This study aims to analyze the spatial configuration of the historical bazaar of Kermanshah and to identify routes suitable for pedestrianization by employing methods such as Space Syntax, Visibility Graph Analysis, Void-Solid modeling, and spatial analysis tools including QGIS and Depthmap. Following the extraction and modeling of accurate base maps, key indicators such as connectivity, integration, and spatial intelligibility were evaluated. The results reveal that certain main corridors and secondary alleys possess high potential for pedestrianization. Finally, three design scenarios are proposed to enhance spatial quality and walkability, and their potential social, environmental, and economic impacts are discussed.
