Abstract:

Personality types of Iranian senior high school EFL learners with the focus on gender differences were explored in this study. The Big Five Personality Types survey, developed by Goleman (۱۹۹۲), was used to identify the personality type of each participant: openness, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness, or neuroticism. To this end, ۱۰۰ senior high school EFL learners (۵۰ males and ۵۰ females) with the age range from ۱۴ to ۱۸ were randomly selected through four different high schools during the ۲۰۲۳-۲۰۲۴ school year. The descriptive statistics, chi-square test and Phi/Cramer's V statistic test were used to analyze the data. The results demonstrated a moderate-to-strong relationship between gender and personality types. Moreover, males exhibited higher rates of extraversion and conscientiousness, while females had greater tendencies toward agreeableness and openness to experience. Neuroticism also showed a gender-based disparity, with a higher proportion of males classified as neurotic.
