Abstract:

High-voltage circuit breakers are pivotal components in electrical substations, enabling fault isolation, load switching, and system stability. Among the most widely deployed technologies are vacuum circuit breakers (VCBs) and sulfur hexafluoride (SF۶) circuit breakers. Each type offers distinct advantages in terms of arc-quenching performance, operational life, maintenance needs, and environmental impact. This paper presents a comprehensive comparative analysis of vacuum and SF۶ circuit breakers in high-voltage applications. Key performance metrics, maintenance strategies, failure modes, lifecycle costs, and ecological considerations are examined. The study draws on field data from substations in Iran and international literature to provide recommendations for utilities seeking optimal performance and environmental compliance.
