Continuity plates in box columns

One of the effective components in providing the stiffness of fixed beam-to-column connections is the appropriate stiffeners (continuity plates) at the connection zone. The presence of continuity plates plays a decisive role in ensuring the stiffness and proper performance of the connection. Installing continuity plates in H-shaped columns is easily achievable; however, in box-shaped columns, due to the closed cross-section, their installation is accompanied by difficulties. For this reason, some steel structure contractors avoid installing them. Undoubtedly, the absence of continuity plates leads to improper connection performance.
