Abstract:

Introduction: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the main reason for cervical cancer, and that is one of the most common causes of morbidity and mortality in women. This study aimed to provide an overview of knowledge and attitudes about HPV infection in Iranian medical students. Methods: This study is based on search in international and national databases; including PubMed (NCBI), Science Direct, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, Scientific Information Database (SID), IranMedex, Magiran, and Irandoc. The research was performed using the terms of medical subject headings (MeSH) and combinations of the keywords included: “human papillomavirus” or “HPV” with the words “knowledge,” “awareness,” “medical student”, “attitude” and “Iran.” Results: evaluation of ۱۷ eligible studies with sample size of ۶,۲۲۶ showed, the overall knowledge and attitude of the Iranian medical students about HPV was low and negative. Conclusion: Medical students have low levels of knowledge about HPV infection; this study also shows that HPV vaccine coverage is still low in students. So, the educational program is necessary to increase the knowledge and attitude to prevent its incidence and complications. Keywords: Knowledge, Attitude, Medical Students, Human Papilloma Virus
