Abstract:

Team sports play a pivotal role in promoting physical health, social interaction, and motor skill development. Recent innovations in sport design have sought to adapt traditional games to unconventional environments, yet volleyball-based activities on low-friction ice surfaces remain unexplored. This study introduces a novel ice-based team sport inspired by volleyball, integrating fundamental volleyball principles with the unique mechanical and environmental constraints of an icy surface. The sport is played on an elliptical ice rink featuring a multi-layered hemisphere design, with a centrally positioned curved net whose height and placement are geometrically determined to ensure fairness in offensive and defensive actions. Detailed regulations govern player movement, delta-zone restrictions, speed, serving, spiking, defensive rotations, and scoring procedures, emphasizing safety, precision, and balance. Gameplay requires continuous skating, coordinated passes, and targeted strikes, challenging players’ neuromuscular control, balance, and tactical decision-making. By formalizing the playing environment, rules, and scoring system, this framework provides a standardized model for recreational and competitive implementation. The introduction of this sport expands opportunities for athletic engagement in cold climates, encourages innovation in team sports, and offers a platform for future research in motor skill development, biomechanics, and performance analysis under dynamic, low-friction conditions.
