Abstract:

The rapid pace of globalization and urbanization in the ۲۱st century presents a critical challenge: how to develop cities that are both modern and sustainable while retaining their unique cultural identity. This paper investigates the profound and multifaceted influence of cultural heritage on contemporary architectural styles and urban development paradigms. Moving beyond a simplistic mimicry of historical forms, the research argues that a meaningful engagement with cultural heritage—encompassing tangible, intangible, and natural elements—is essential for creating authentic, context-sensitive, and resilient built environments. The paper employs a qualitative methodology, synthesizing existing literature, and analyzing global case studies to explore the theoretical frameworks, practical applications, and persistent challenges in this domain. It examines how contemporary architects are translating vernacular principles, traditional materials, and socio-spatial patterns into innovative designs that respond to modern needs and environmental imperatives. In the urban realm, the study analyzes heritage-led regeneration projects, the role of cultural landscapes, and the integration of heritage into sustainable urban planning. The findings reveal that the most successful interventions are those that engage in a critical dialogue with the past, fostering cultural continuity, social cohesion, and ecological sustainability. However, significant challenges remain, including the risks of commodification, the threat of gentrification, and the need for inclusive governance. The paper concludes that cultural heritage is not a static relic to be preserved but a dynamic and evolving resource. Its thoughtful integration into contemporary architecture and urban planning is a strategic imperative for building cities that are not only efficient but also meaningful, distinctive, and profoundly human.
