Emerging Job Opportunities in the Shadow of Climate Change: Identifying Leading Academic Disciplines

The present research aims to identify and introduce leading academic disciplines to leverage emerging job opportunities arising from climate change. The research methodology employed a comparative approach and examined international experiences. In this context, using three international ranking systems, top countries and universities in the field of climate change were identified, and their academic disciplines were analyzed. In the subsequent step, after compiling a list of climate change-related academic disciplines offered by universities worldwide, their status within Iranian universities and higher education institutions was investigated. The results indicate the existence of ۶۸ academic disciplines in the field of climate change globally. Furthermore, the findings of the second phase of the research revealed that ۱۷ of the identified disciplines are not currently offered in Iranian universities, while ۱۲ disciplines are currently available based on a review of approved academic programs by the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology. Additionally, ۴۱ disciplines show similarities in terms of syllabus and course units with existing academic programs. It is hoped that policymakers and planners in the Iranian higher education system will review the list of academic disciplines presented in the field of climate change, particularly those not currently offered, and facilitate the establishment of these disciplines by removing and replacing outdated academic programs to capitalize on new job opportunities
