Abstract:
This study presents a comparative analysis of two Persian translations of Jean Teule's The Suicide Shop (۲۰۰۶), translated by Karamveisi (۲۰۱۷) and Dolatyari (۲۰۱۹), through the lens of Van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework. The research aimed to evaluate how effectively each translation conveys the ideological, social, and cultural dimensions of the source text and to identify linguistic and socio-cultural alignments between the French original and its Persian renditions. Addressing two key questions-how ideological aspects are transferred and whether significant differences exist between the translators' strategies-the study employed both qualitative and quantitative methods. Qualitative findings revealed that both translations predominantly utilized similar discursive strategies such as euphemism, example/illustration, generalization, hyperbole, irony, lexicalization, metaphor, and presupposition, as outlined in Van Dijk's model. Quantitative analysis further demonstrated a positive correlation between the source text and both target texts regarding the selection of translation strategies. These results suggest that both translators maintained a high degree of fidelity to the author's ideological intent. Pedagogically, this study underscores the importance of applying critical discourse frameworks in translator training to heighten awareness of ideological nuances and socio-cultural factors, thereby fostering more nuanced and culturally sensitive translations.
