Abstract:
Anti-fog polypropylene (PP) films are engineered to prevent condensation of moisture on packaged goods, improving visibility and shelf life. This review summarizes production methods, additive chemistry, and applications of multilayer PP films containing zinc oxide (ZnO) and montmorillonite (MMT) nanoparticles as dual-function agents. We discuss the history of PP film casting, noting that cast PP (CPP) films are produced by extruding molten PP onto chilled rollers to form non-oriented films with excellent clarity. Anti-fog PP films offer advantages such as improved product presentation (water condenses as a transparent film rather than droplets) and extended shelf life of high-moisture foods. We detail the mechanism of anti-fogging: surfactant additives (glycerol and sorbitan esters, polyglycerol esters, etc.) migrate to the film surface, forming a hydrophilic layer that spreads condensed water into a uniform film. Key additives include glycerol monostearate, sorbitan monooleate, and ethoxylated sorbitan esters. Their physicochemical properties (HLB, melting point, solubility) are compared in Table ۱. We outline film production techniques: cast extrusion, blown extrusion, coating, and multilayer coextrusion. ZnO/MMT nanocomposites in PP improve antimicrobial protection and barrier performance, further enhancing shelf life.
