Abstract:
Smart grid power systems have the potential to reduce energy usage by modernizing current electrical grids. These systems work by allowing real- time monitoring and adjustment of power ow using communication between net metering systems located at the sites of both the suppliers and consumers. Smart grids must mitigate the effects of disruptions within the network by appropriately adjusting power ow routes and preventing cascading failure propagation. The need for strict network security is one of the reasons that widespread implementation of smart grids has yet to occur. In order to better understand the manner in which such issues can be resolved, I am working to design an application that allows users to implement and test cascade failure mitigation algorithms.
