Abstract:

Urban transportation plays a crucial role in the dynamism and quality of life for city residents, and its management is a key prerequisite for achieving sustainable cities. Given the environmental challenges such as pollution, congestion, accidents, public transport decline, environmental degradation, climate change, energy depletion, visual intrusion, and lack of accessibility for the urban poor, evaluating urban transportation management from an environmental sustainability perspective is essential. This study aims to analyze urban transportation management in Tehran’s District ۷ in terms of four criteria such as economic, social, environmental-ecological and functional-physical. Adopting a descriptive-analytical research method, data was collected through both library and field studies. The primary tool for data collection was a Likert-scale questionnaire, which was distributed among a random sample of ۴۰۰ residents in Tehran’s District ۷. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) and inferential tests (one-sample t-test). The results indicated that overall urban transportation management and its economic, social, and physical-functional criteria were evaluated as semi-sustainable, while the environmental-ecological criteria were deemed unsustainable. The findings also suggest that, in certain respects, urban transportation management is not fully aligned with environmental sustainability goals. The results of this study may help urban planners and managers in Tehran municipal to tackle certain transport-related problems and issues that need to be resolved.
