The effect of hemophilia care education on mental health of mothers with hemophiliachild under 15 years old

Abstract:

Background& Aims: Hemophilia is the most common inherited bleeding disorder and also the third common disorder depending on X chromosome which is a deficiency or lack of Factor VIII or IX in blood. In families without history of hemophilia patients, having a hemophilia child can jeopardize the mental health of parents, especially mothers and causes disabilities to take care of hemophilia child. So, the aim of present study was to determine the effect of hemophilia care education on the mental health of the mothers with hemophilia child under 15 years old in Tehran. Materials and Methods: In a semi-experimental design, among 200 mothers of hemophilia patients under 15 years old, 30 of them with high scores in General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) were selected through accessible sampling and then they were randomized to experimental and control groups. The experimental group was educated in 8 sessions but control group received no intervention. Then, these two groups completed General Health Questionnaire again. Data wereanalyzed using a statistical method Covariate (Ancova). Results: The findings of research indicated that hemophilia care education in significance level (p≤0.05) improved the rate of mental health and also reduced the rates of somatic symptoms, anxiety and depression in hemophilia patients' mothers. But this education was not significantly affected on Mothers 'social function improvement. Conclusion: Hemophilia cares education can be effective in enhance of mental health in mothers with hemophilia child. So, it is recommended all of mothers with hemophilia child and other Hemophilia caregivers receive the hemophilia care education
