Abstract:
The propensity for renewable energy sources has increased significantly due to environmental issues and fossil fuels elevated cost. However in renewable energies, wind power plants are the fastest progressive power generation sources and this trend is expected to continue. Modern wind plants in offshore wind farms (OWFs) have grown in capacity that can no longer be ignored in power system studies. Additionally, a large penetration of wind generation in an OWF into the power system will bring a number of challenges on system planning, operation, and impact analyses. This paper provides an overview of offshore wind energy systems technologies, and considers main challenges of OWFs including transmission, conversion and collection. As recently High Voltage Direct Current system based on Voltage Source Converters (VSC-HVDC) is becoming a more beneficial solution for long distance offshore wind plants, this paper focuses more on power quality aspect of VSC-HVDC, especially harmonic study of OWFs.
