Abstract:
One of the skills which helps students to improve the reading comprehension is knowing about metadiscoursal expressions. This study was an attempt to investigate whether teachingmetadiscoursal expressions had any statistical impact on reading comprehension ability of Iranian fourth grade high school students. After dividing homogeneous groups of the participants into two groups as control and experimental, the researcher administered a pre-test of readingcomprehension to the students of both groups. Then, the students in the control group were taught in conventional way of teaching reading. After the treatment for experimental group in 15sessions, both groups’ reading comprehension ability was tested through a post-test to examinethe effect of treatment. The mean differences were to do with the difference between the pre-test and post-test of each group, and then the difference between the two groups’ post-test in comparison to one another. To test the research hypothesis, comparing the pretests and posttests between the controlgroup and the experimental group by t-test, the researcher found significant difference betweenthe experimental and control group’s reading comprehension ability. This showed that teaching metadiscoursal expressions helped students improve reading comprehension ability.
