Abstract:
Tunneling through densely populated areas is usually associated with undesirable ground movement anddamage to adjacent buildings. Consequently, it is essential to investigate the mechanism of the soil movementsaround the tunnel as well as ground surface. Laboratory model tests provide comprehensive understanding ofthe soil movements induced by tunneling and failure mechanism as well. A variety of physical modelingtechniques have been developed by researchers all over the world to study ground response to tunneling. Thesetechniques range from the 2D trap door tests to the miniature tunnel boring machines that simulate the processof tunnel excavation and lining installation in the centrifuge. This study presents a review of selected physicalmodels that have been developed to investigate the magnitude of the minimum supporting pressure to the tunnelface and failure mechanism.
