Abstract:
Solid-liquid extraction modelling is an effective tool for predicting the plant behaviour at the time of extraction. In this study, mass-transfer models are proposed for the extraction of essential oil from thyme. Thymus daenensis was chosen for the experiments. The effect of residence time on the extraction of thymol from thyme through percolation with water-ethanol solvent was investigated. Mass-transfer coefficients based on steady state and kinetic modelling equations were obtained at 20ºC. The modelling and experimental results were compared. The results indicate that the kinetic model has a good consistency with experimental data of thyme extraction.
