Abstract:
Grafting of methyl methacrylate (MMA) onto both gelatinized and dissolved potato starch in aqueous media was compared as MMA/starch weight ratio varied. In graft copolymerization, ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) was used as initiator at 50°C. By increasing the MMA/starch weight ratio, the grafting degree of PMMA onto the gelatinized starch increased while the grafting degree onto the dissolved starch molecules decreased. Nevertheless, at lower MMA/starch weight ratios a much higher grafting degree was observed for the solution-based graft copolymers compared to the gelatin-based ones. This behavior can be attributed to the grafting level of the MMA onto individual starch molecules in the
starch solution which increased substantially the grafting surface in the copolymerization. The impact energy of the solution-based copolymers decreased as the MMA/starch weight ratio increased.
