Abstract:
Boiling of surfactant solutions is important in many key industrial applications such as hygiene and personal care, pharmaceutical, and food processing, among others. In this study, saturated nucleate pool boiling of aqueous surfactant solutions at low concentrations (0-500 ppm) on a horizontal cylindrical heater has been experimentally investigated. Triton X-100, a non-ionic surfactant, is employed. Effects of both of triton X-100 concentration, and the heat flux on heat transfer performance are studied. The bubble dynamic (bubble nucleation, growth and departure) was investigated by high-speed video recording. The results show that the bubble behavior and the heat transfer mechanism for the surfactant solution are quite different from those of pure water. The experimental results have shown that the addition of limited amounts of triton X-100 to the pure water improves the heat transfer coefficient up to 80%. Also a new model for the prediction of heat transfer coefficient for aqueous triton X-100 solutions is proposed, which predicts the experimental data with a satisfactory accuracy.
