Abstract:
The human visual system (HVS) sensitivity varies based on various factors such as the spatial or temporal frequency, the velocity of a visual signal, background luminance level, eye movements, etc. Such sensitivity variations are usually characterized by the so-called contrast sensitivity function (CSF). In this paper, we present a spatio-velocity method to estimate CSF over a broad range of various background luminance levels. The proposed spatio-velocity CSF complies well with the well-known Ferry-Porter law in psychophysics in the sense that its critical cutoff frequency (CFF) varies linearly with the logarithm of the background luminance level. Experimental results conducted using moving stimuli on a high dynamic range (HDR) display indicated that the proposed method is able to estimate contrast sensitivity of the HVS for motion imagery with a high accuracy. The resultant spatio-velocity CSF can be utilized in a wide variety of engineering applications such as perceptual signal processing and HDR display design technologies.
