Abstract:
The acquisition of a language can be affected by many factors, both internal and external. Thesefactors can be cultural, social, physical, or a combination of all three. One particularly interestingvariable to both second language acquisition specialists and sociolinguists is gender because thisvariable affects both first and second language development and use. A number of studies havebeen completed to analyze the effect of gender on language acquisition. There do appear to besome differences in the processing and acquisition of second language between the two sexes, however there is neither enough research to be certain nor concrete evidence to show whetherthese differences are the result of socio-cultural, psychological, or biological differences betweensexes. Some of these differences exist in their use of speech practices and their choice ofpreference for different learning strategies but it does not mean that one gender is better atlearning a language than the other. It has also been proven that men and women speak verydifferently from each other which is true in all cultures and languages
