Abstract:

Sedimentation issues in a port area have always been one aspect of concern in the development of a new port or the expansion of an existing port. In the construction of any port infrastructure within the coastal regime for instance a jetty, a turning basin, a breakwater or even a navigation channel, physical impacts that could potentially be created due to their constructing along the shoreline or to the immediate water surroundings could be simulated so that positive steps could be undertaken at an early stage in order to minimize any adverse impacts. This paper will highlight an investigation where computer simulations were made to check and confirm the probable impacts of any sedimentation that could result the construction of a proposed cargo jetty close to a rivermouth in the Jabor Port waterfront area and to its immediate coastal surroundings. In projecting physical impacts from the construction of the new jetty, field data within the Johor Straits and neighboring rivers were collected to calibrate and verify the model and two corputational scenarios were setup. The computational scenarios in the area were simulated and the other of the After-Project Completion Condition, the scenario where a new cargo jetty was included in the study area to assess for any impacts.
