Abstract:

The growth in magnitude and various impacts of traffic noise hascreated an increasing attention on the prediction and control ofnoise levels. This study aims at developing a noise levelprediction model under the local conditions of Amman, thecapital of Jordan. Thirty four sites, representing differentcharacteristics, were selected for use in model development. Theresulting prediction model incorporated variables describingtraffic and site conditions including traffic volume, compositionand speed, gradient, and distance from the source as affectingfactors, the trial model expresses noise level by the index L10(1hr). The developed model was validated by comparing itspredicted noise levels with those measured. Further evaluationof the model was carried out by comparing its predictions withthose obtained using the British Calculation of Road TrafficNoise (CRTN) model. The developed model was found toproduce more accurate results, under Jordanian trafficconditions, than the CRTN model with an average error of only3.2%.
