Abstract:
Recently, chemical warm additives are used to decrease the mixing and compaction temperature of asphalt mixtures. Since polymer modified asphalt mixtures are fabricated at very high temperatures, chemical warm additives can be used as an important alternative to reduce the fabrication temperatures. This paper presents the characterization of the effects of a chemical warm additive, namely Rediset on rheological properties of a polymer modified asphalt binder at very high, high and intermediate temperatures. In tropical countries, rutting and fatigue are the two prevalent pavement surface distresses. Thus, Superpave rutting and fatigue factors of polymer modified asphalt binder incorporating Rediset subjected to unaged, short-term aging and long-term aging were investigated using dynamic shear rheometer (DSR). In addition, the viscosity of the asphalt binders, as an important criterion in evaluation of warm mix asphalt additives, was measured using a Rotational Viscometer (RV). The results showed that Rediset has not negative effect on the Superpave rutting factors (G*/sinδ). Also, it improves the rotational viscosity and Superpave fatigue factor (G*sinδ) of the selected polymer modified asphalt binder
