Abstract:
This paper investigates the seismic performance of a base isolated cable-stayed bridgeunder earthquake excitations. The selected bridge is a steel bridge which has overalllength of 183.2m with 43m tall steel tower. Two-dimensional finite element models of theoriginal and base isolated bridges are modeled by SAP2000 software. For this aim, TheFriction Pendulum Isolator is designed based on AASHTO code of practice. SierraMadre-1991 and South Napa-2014, ground motion records are applied in longitudinaldirection of the bridge to determine its nonlinear seismic response. The comparativeresults showed that the base isolator increased the deck displacement, reduced the baseshear and the base moment of the tower, remarkably. As conclusion, base isolationsystem mitigated damage possibility to the cable-stayed bridge which is induced byseismic action
