A survey on peer-to-peer video streaming systems

Video-over-IP applications have recently attracteda large number of users on the Internet. Traditionalclient-server based video streaming solutionsincur expensive bandwidth provision cost on the server.Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networking is a new paradigm tobuild distributed network applications. Recently, severalP2P streaming systems have been deployed toprovide live and on-demand video streaming serviceson the Internet at low server cost. In this paper, weprovide a survey on the existing P2P solutions for liveand on-demand video streaming. Representative P2Pstreaming systems, including tree, multi-tree and meshbased systems are introduced. We describe the challengesand solutions of providing live and on-demandvideo streaming in P2P environment. Open researchissues on P2P video streaming are also discussed.
